All the usual multi norm bits and also 25-30mhz via un-solder a jumper. New on the market place, a sample comes here the next days.

After this there is the EXCEL version on the way? So not sure what the difference is. Made in Thailand once more and maybe 10w possible. Just need to check the board and see if it is almost the same as the 278

Cut the wire and adjust the RV anti-clockwise and another radio that makes between 15-20w AM/FM on all bands including ru,sw,px etc.

You chase me around each forum. The modification on the radio is direct from the service manual. The radio is a 10w radio and the wire makes the radio comply with CE and legal standard approvals. So, which actual radio you have??

Is it total multi norm radio and where was it bought? OR is it a simple banded one.

Bought in Italy, is a 248 Multi.
I've made the mod for the RU channels and today I have checked the Watt with an Rosmeter/Wattmeter and I have more or less 4.5 / 5 Watt.
I've tried on all Bands but it's all the same...

248 is manufactured by Maxon as a 10w radio, and the wire restricts it and makes it legal. Seems maybe there is something different with yours. I have modded some now, more than 10 and with the wire cut each make 10-13w as described in the manuals

The 248 and 248 Excels are very nice looking sets. I might take a look at them, as my current rigs are getting on a bit now and could do with being retired.

I bought a 248 Multi Excel yesterday. I’ve been researching the mods for the RU band and increased power.

Am I right in assuming I need to change the solder jumpers?

OPT1 Close
OPT2 Open
OPT3 Close

I haven’t opened the case up yet, so I don’t know how the jumpers are configured yet, and which one need changing.

The wire jumper looks reasonably easy to cut for 10w. Do I have to turn RV 902 fully anticlockwise?

PS, on mine the transmit LED is green for transmit and red for receive. That’s odd isn’t it?

Depends on how yours has been set. Mine was as you told here and the mods are on www.mods.dk but some others have done the mod and have not the extras so seems to be market dependent.
BUT YOU LOOSE all warranty and on a radio like that the warranty is important so i'd not mod it, ain't worth it

I'll probably leave mine along for a while at least. Albeit, the 10w mod would handy, even if I didn't do the RU mod.

Understand with the 10m mod but seems some of these radios open easily and are done quick and some are not. Not sure what has happened but there are more than a handful of cases now where they have been opened and the 10w power mod simply did not work. Seems to be something different with later models or some added components maybe?

I got onto mods.dk this morning to have a look at the mods to my 248.

I'll leave the RU mod, but I may do the 10w mods as it look easy to repair should the mod not work for me.

I fully understand the risks.

Most units need the wire cut and thats all. Not any need for anything else. Power is usually around 8-12w depending as before on the radio. Some make 15w, some struggle to 9w.

But the manual says its a 400ch 10w radio before the restrictions are added

oppps forgot. Some models have the wire simply soldered together and need remove the solder and mod done, just insulate the ends of the wires and do not let them touch and thats it

Just did the power mods on mine.

The white wire hadn't been cut or soldered - so I carefully unsoldered one end off the circuit board so I could reattach it later of needed.

In early tests into an external power meter, I seem to have about 12w now.

Indeed this can be true, you need to adjust the s-meter till it shows on the 10w..

I've just completed the RU mod. It was a bit tricky, but all went well in the end. I’ve checked output transmit on my scanner and it seems ok. Tried both 25.615 and 30.105 am and fm.

SW band didn't seem to work, but that is 31 MHz, so no problem. There was one other band that didn't work, can't remember now, as long as RU works I'm happy.

Great News Indeed. SW ain't worth it and if you have rU working then maybe its PO that is not? I cannot remember how the mod worked on mine. And about the power yes indeed, try it on AM when moving and sure the radio whistles to around 17w. Great News all ok, thats really superb to know

Yes that's right Simon. It is PO that won't work. Not a big issue with me.

I've had some good contacts with the rig, the extra few watts are definitely making the difference. One breaker said my FM modulation sounded a little quiet, but I’ll wait for some more reports before I look into that.

One anomaly – the power meter is inconsistent. On UK40 it reads about 5w. On Mid-band and all the others its displays roughly the measured output power. A slight annoyance to be honest.
