Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
I'll try this again.
You will not find a manual for this, or I never have for mine.
These come in a number of variations & were hand built on the Isle of Man.
They are one of the best manual tuners available & will match almost anything to 50 ohms.
DO NOT EVER EVER EVER USE MORE THAN 100 WATTS AS YOU WILL GET FLASH OVER & THE SEM WILL BECOME USELESS.
Looking at the back of mine.
Top four posts are for balanced line.
Far left nut is for earth.
Top left So-239 10 - 80 meter 50 Ohm RF output
Bottom left SO-239 RF input from TX.
Bottom middle post long wire.
Top right SO-239 top band RF output, this will match a bigger impedance mismatch than the 10 - 80 & thus allow you to use almost any 50 Ohm coax fed antenna on any band.
Bottom right black & red sockets are for the 12 volt input for the easi tune.
To use the easi tune you switch it on & tune for highest noise no RF is used so it is VERY band friendly & means that you can tune up on an in use frequency.

thanks for the info daxi mutch apreaseated. i thinck my atu is slitley difirent to yours, looking at the back of mine i have 4 posts along the top. 2 red posts on the right side, and 2 black posts on left side. just underthe middle of red posts i have one pl259 plug which ses [HF ] JUST IN MIDDLE OF BLACK POSTS ANOTHER PL259 PLUG WITH [ LF ] ON IT. BOTTOM LEFT HAND SIDE ANOTHER PL259 PLUG DONT KNOW WHAT THIS IS FOR, I ONLY BAGHT ATU FOR RECEIVER REALISTIC DX-394 .I DONT HAVE TRANCEIVER LISTENING HF IS MY HOBBY, I AM NEW TO THIS. I WAS TOLD ATU MIGHT MAKE RESEPTION BETTER , I CAN ONLY TRY. BI THE WAY WHAT IS A BALANSED LINE. AT THE MOMENT I USE A 40 FOOT LONG WIRE. SORRY TO BE SO VAGE .

Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
The above is ladder line.
The SO-239 marked LF is the top band (180 meter) antenna connector.
The SO-239 that is marked HF is the 80 - 10 meter antenna socket.
There should be a black post on it's own some where, this is for the long wire, if that does not exist then you may need to get something like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LONG-WIRE-TO-PL259-ADAPTOR-L@@K-%22JUST-THE-JOB%22_W0QQitemZ390138679388QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxq20100103?IMSfp=TL100103233001r1547
Something else you can do to improve HF reception is use a 9:1 balun away from the house & electrical noise, if you then also use a earth rod at the feed point (Baluns sometimes have this option,) this will improve thing a bit more.
Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
undefined thanks for info again daxi .you must have worked hard to send me this info.thanks for your time,............. i have 2 long wire conections going by what you say[ 1red 1black on left side ] 1 red [1 black on right side] but if the black ones are for long wire, what are the red ones for. i have heard about the 9 .1 balun i will have to get one of these . thanks again ..........ger.

Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
The four black & red posts are for balanced feeder, also known as ladder line. It comes in various widths/ impedances & I think the posts on the right are for 80 - 10 & the posts on the right are for top band (160 mtrs.)
You should have a seperate single black post for a long wire.
The 9:1 balaun or (9:1 un/un to give it it's correct name,) can make a big difference for several reasons the first they allow you to place the antenna away from household electrical noise. The second they allow a earth to be place at the feed point, thus again reducing noise. But they are not essential & most listeners do not use them.
So if you are considering using a 9:1 buy one that has two posts, use an earth stake & budget in a length of coax.
Do you listen to the SW free radio stations? If so have you found the Alfa Lima Int site? Their forum is used for reception reports & broadcast skeds etc.
If you need any more info just shout, each of these SEM's is differnt because the way they were made seems to have depended upon where they got the parts from that day.
A 9:1 balun is available via ebay for about Ā£15 - Ā£20.

EARTHING
DAXI......... I have now earthed my hf radio . should have done this from the start.being new to hf listening, did not think it would make mutch difirense. but i was wrong . it does make a lot of difirense , my radio is now earthed propely,i have put an earth rod out side ,made of copper ROD , ROD is 4 foot long with three and a half foot in the ground . i have not tried a 9.1 balun yet, audio seems ok..........THANKS AGAIN.

Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
Earthing does make a massive difference & as to the balun, don't spend on what you do not need,. A balun will help you match the antenna & give you a earth at the antenna feed point, but the cost is not always worth the benifit.
Have a look at the BDXC http://www.bdxc.org.uk/ I am a member & first joined back in the very early 80's, it's a great club & gets you things like the World Radio & TV Handbook cheap, the handbook is a list of ALL of the worlds Radio & TV stations their frequencies, addresses & lots more.

Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
One place worth listening to late at night on a Friday or Saturday night is around 1600 - 1700 khz where the Dutch free radio broadcasters traditionally broadcast.
I have always listened to non military traffic on HF so have listened to Kinloss, but I would expect traffic to very minimal at night.

Re: S.E.M TRAN Z MATCH ATU
I have found the following on Scanproma yahoo group.
.Hi,
The main HF freq for SAR in the UK is 5680 USB.
You will hear various helo,s being controlled by Kinloss Rescue, from RAF
Kinloss in North East Scotland on this freq.
During the summer months 5680 is used 24 hours a day, but at this time of year
they normally change to a night time freq later on in the afternoon, this freq
will vary due to propagation, but recently 3302, 3026, and 4718 have all been
used. {all USB}
Another good one is 2182 USB, this is for marine stuff, and you will hear
various Coastguard stations and shipping round the UK, Europe, USA, and Canada.
After dark is a better time due to propagation.
A couple of freqs to try, just to make sure your radio and antenna are working
OK are 5450 USB which is RAF Volmet and 5505 which is Shannon Volmet.
Volmet broadcast are just constant weather broadcasts for aircraft, but they are
there 24 hours a day, and it will let you know that your gear is working.
I hope this helps,
Regards,
Steven,
South West Scotland
Hi Michael,
There is no set freq for their night primary, it depends on propogation.
You will often hear them at this time of year somewhere late afternoon on
5680, once the propogation starts changing, telling the helo to change to a
night time prim freq.
Unless you hear Kinloss telling the helo,s to change freq or someone makes a
posting of the freq, there is no other way of finding out, in the past few
days its been 3026 or 3302, but normaly a quick scan through the known ones
and you will find them, as there is almost always some activity.
More often than not, someone usualy makes a posting of the freq on the yahoo
SAR group.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Steven.
Hi Michael,
The freqs that have been noted this winter are 5680 4718 3302 3026 33326
3226.
Steven.
