i have a 144 swr meter that has a slight fault,when setting the forward ,the needle bounches all over the range .any ideas?.could it be a component on its way out?

This does happen sometimes, but being a technical inept I'm not sure why 
Normally just putting a small drop of switch cleaner in the pot solves the problem immediately.

Check the SO-239 sockets make sure the PL259 plugs are making good connections.Check all lead connections.
Is your patch lead ok ?
Daft question is the meter ok for the frequency you are trying to check VSWR.Have you shoved a lot of RF through it.
Is it rated for the power .
