Re: Are PMR radios any good?
Depends on the brand really. I have some here from China and they are not too bad but the last one that I have tried is the Midland Alan G12 that was sent to me here free to TEST, that is not common as all things reviewed here are normally paid for by me.
Band:
8 channels PMR
70cm with repeater offsets
LPD
You can program 16 channels via the data cable and software and also 3 watts output. The radio is excellent indeed, well made and works a treat.
Sadly mine is returned and on the way back to Lance and Colin. BUT, they have an awesome radio there and me soon a empty pocket as will order one at Neuner here

Re: Are PMR radios any good?
That is a hard question indeed. Here, i have a couple of the newer Motorolas and they are not as good as the earlier ones, seems there is a change there somewhere?
Hoffer here is Binatone and they seem to work well, normally the cheaper ones do not have CTSS and that can come in a little helpful after christmas when all the kids are active

Wouldn't these PMR 'handies' be erm well handy for you fellas organising trips up them there hills to stay in contact with, if Kevin and Dave are on two hilll tops in close proximity then it would be interesting to see what results could be had on a hand held PMR set betwenn you two fellas.
You could have communication with each other on another band out of earshot of 11m
