My new antennas...

Well my new ones are slightly smaller... I have a 20m mobile antenna. 2 2m mobile antennas. 1 is for my car and the other is tiny with a small mag-mount fixed to it for use with the work's car and the Yaesu VX-7R. It's ideal as it has lightweight coax to stop the strain on the handheld...

I live in a house with a VERY small garden surrounded on all four sides by houses.
Mobile I use single band whips. But have one of those duel band mini mags that I have used to give me 70 Cm's at Scout camps.
Home base we run a Diamond CP-6 80 - 6 meter vertical & a three band 6mtrs, 2 mtrs & 70 cm's Co linear.
Plus we have a three band 6,2 & 70 cm TX discone.
In the garage I have a 70cm co linear & a 6 meter 3 ele beam that I have been given but never used.
I also have Miracle Whip & an ATX walkabout & various wire antennas for portable use.
I'm also in the process of setting up a 80 meter kite antenna, that is I have the parts & will one day fit them all together & try it out Arrow ONE DAY

Well Alan that is why I don't have a home setup. I don't have the room for the antennas also. I have houses all around and would cause someone tvi (I'm sure)!!! I am going to try the handy in the house and hope it works ok.
The kite antenna sounds great. I don't have an ATU at the mo so am buying single band mobile whips. I have seen a 30m and 40m mobile whip for £26.99 each. Might ask santa for one of them.
I used the 1ft whip for 2m on the works van and it worked very well for receive on the handy. Very pleased as I will use it all the time in work and you cant see the antenna.

My new antennas... Empty Re: My new antennas...

Verticals are said to be more prone to causing EMC than horizontals. And TV pre amps are said to be so broadband that they will amplify everything & cause EMC.
My Vertical HF antenna is fitted to a ground floor extension in front of our bedroom window, with a TV antenna with mast head amplifier fitted only 20 - 30 feet away & pointing across the top of my antenna.
I have done in some respects everything wrong, I have not even bothered to fit a notch filter despite that pre amp, yet I get no EMC problems.
And we often use the radio during the early evening for various nets, so it's not as if we were causing problems, but only when our neighbours are not watching TV.
So if 50 watts into a low vertical with no notch filter fitted, that close to a TV antenna can operate I'm sure you will be able to. But if you are still worried then look at a notch filter.
These are filters which have a very sharp cut of each side of a specific band, attenuating any signal in or out to such an extent that it should cause no problems.
AKD do notch filters & for £10 each including postage, which even if not really needed could give you value for money peace of mind & thats what counts. (we used one on our VHF special event station at an air show for that peace of mind reason.
http://www.garex.co.uk/AKD/akd.htm

There are also often low pass filters available which would cut off all signals above say 30 MHz & would thus stop any HF signal spurious from causing any problems.
But for most people running low power, 10 watts or less, stops the EMC. And as that is for the time being your limit, then you have very little to worry about.

Cheers Alan,

I might have a go at putting a 2m antenna up first sometime and testing it that way. The AKD Notch filter sounds a good idea if I move to HF or SSB DX'ing from the home qth...

I was in work this evening with my new call sign. Had a couple nice qso's with some lads on the Stockport repeater (145.650) also had a chat with someone I used to talk to on the CB some years ago in Mold, N Wales. That was quite a good contact Simplex Mold 2 Runcorn/Warrington. Poss the best contact tonight.

Nice one.
Those first contacts are so special. My daughter got a QSL from two of the International Short Wave League members for her first HF ones as they took place on the ISWL net. So we had to go out a buy a album for her collection Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
Sjust been invited to take part in a Scout net which happens in a local village. Which she is sooooooooooo keen to do. It will be her, a cub, one guide & up to 20 Scouts.

Great stuff m8, looks nice, make use of the trees as well for long wires like a G5RV if you are allowed to string a wire between two of those trees in the background.

Have you been on HF yet on SSB ?

I'm now tempted very much but getting the time to study is difficult at the moment due to work load.

Go for it. It does not require a lot of home learning to pass the foundation & the course can be done start to pass certificate in a weekend. And if a group of 8 young Scouts, a Guide & my 9 year old daughter who a Cub ?Scout can do it in a weekend, then I'm sure you can.
