Re: ANY THOUGHTS
I have something similar, 8m fibreglass fishing pole, an UNUN , I use 7.4 m 1.5 ml covered copper wire.
It works, I have used it portable, to be honest, only on 60m but it works.
I have used it a couple of times in my front garden, my garden is 28ft by 19ft, classic postage stamp.
Most people poo poo them and they are usually those who have the facilities to put something substantial in place.
I use a 'stealth' dipole using my loft space and the down pipes outside.
I'd be happy using one but I do realise it is basically a compromise antenna.
Cheap cheerful and they do work.
SRC do the silver rod type as well.
I bought his UNUN, I know shame on me....
pole from ebay( use any pole from 7m to 10m), better results the longer the pole
Cheapest way of doing it.
Look here, this is how it tuned in...
At my QTH

Re: ANY THOUGHTS
I have just been rumaging through HRD's antenna forum &....

The UnUn will reduce the losses on 40m and 15m where the vertical is resonant, but it will make things worse on all the other bands
if im not mistaken the toroid works best at around 10-11 mhz then starts to get lossy. any bands that may of had an acceptable swr without a transformer will of course be made worse by the 9.1 transformer but the high swr's may be better than if no transformer were used.
I've now taken the ballun off mine and used the wire up the middle but extended it to make an inverted L trapped for 40/80m Works 1000000% better on 40m

I have owned one and to be honest, the balun isn't great.... And supplying just one radial.. Well..

I have VERY limited space here & have posted some images of my antenna set up on here.skunkybob wrote:Most people poo poo them and they are usually those who have the facilities to put something substantial in place.
My problem is not with the design...It's with the shoddy rubbish that is Pro Whip.

Try the Snowdoinia ali vertical, better built & great reviews.
Re: ANY THOUGHTS
I was at the Snowdonia lad's stall at the Magnum rally, the bloke was very helpful and answered everything. His stuff is well done, to my shame, I have one of his UNUNs ( I know I should have built one)...
I realise that the UNUN isn't the best solution but it is handy and gives me something to throw up if I go portable...Keeping the wire off the pole lets me use my beam or JPoles...
Let us know how you get on.

Re: ANY THOUGHTS
I have one, that I acquired a few years ago, I have used it on several special event stations, best contacts are...Spanish F1 special event station on 80 meters & a Scout JOTA station in Grand Canaria were we broke a massive pile up first shout on 40 meters.
I have also worked several Scout stations in the US on 20 & The Hebrides on 80.

Re: ANY THOUGHTS
thanks for your replys chaps. i was at the telford hamfest and seen these prowhip antennas and they looked very good
i want something that tunes 10m to 80m and these seem ok for the job. my mate has the src vertical and when he puts 50 watts through it
it just shuts the radio down kenwood ... crazy

What kind of ATU does he use? If it's the inbuilt, then I am not surprised, these things are not the best.
I sometimes use an end fed wire fed via a 9:1 balun & it works fine on up to 400 watts & the only difference is length.
One option worth considering is a 9:1, an earth stake & radials if you have room. (The Earth Stake at the feed point gives you some form of earth & it drops the background static a bit.) Place the feed point as far from the house as you can to reduce noise & then use just under (or over,) say 20 meters of wire, so it is not resonant on any band, run the first part of the wire up a roach pole, & the rest back to & possibly over the house & you have a workable antenna for silly money, that due to it's length will out perform a SRC or pro whip.

Re: ANY THOUGHTS
I was talking to a friend who has one of these earlier today & someone has told him to fit a so called ugly balun, as he had a problem with Common Mode Currents, which is a real possablity here, thinking about it.
DO NOT fit a ugly balun unless you know what you are doing & have done your maths. Chokes can actually increase common mode currents due to harmnics. There are right & wrong chokes for specific situations & the wrong one could produce problems that you are not aware you have until a further problem arises.
A choke balun relies upon impedence, some as little as 500 OHm's & a multi band end fed antennas mismatch will be many times that across much of HF.
If this is common mode current, as I understand the theory, having the radio earthed adds to problems, as does not having the antenna earthed.

Re: ANY THOUGHTS
Have here now a German made telescopic mast and run a wire down it for all bands and works incredibly well /P but from the QTH roof the 10m mst bends too much and already police came a calling
